When we got back from our huge grocery run in my dad's old half-rusted truck, I smelled wolf. Lucy tensed up right away, her eyes darting around nervously.
"It smells like Volkov," I said as we passed the spot with his smell. With my window rolled down, I could still catch his scent. It was very strong to me, irritating and impossible to ignore and just . . . getting into my head. "What's with that guy, anyway?" I asked.
"He's Ferrol's enforcer," she mumbled. "He always stays in his wolf shape that I've seen. It . . . it makes him scarier. He's chased rejected wolves from the territory, bitten other shifters, destroyed property — he's terrifying. There's something . . . wrong about him."
"Does he stay in wolf form because he wants to or has he just gone crazy and forgotten how to shift?" I asked, tightening my hands on the wheel before I got out.
She shrugged. "I wish I knew. Maybe he wouldn't be so scary."
"Well, I'll look after you, so don't worry." Looking all around carefully, I got out of the truck and then opened the door for Lucy.
She smiled like she kind of liked that. "Suddenly I'm a princess."
"Whatever. In the house where it's safe, woman." I gestured exaggeratedly for her to precede me, and she laughed.
I schlepped all the groceries in, and we had a hell of a time finding room for all of them. Okay, maybe we'd gone overboard a little. I drank a bunch of water while I worked, and soon I was bursting for a pee.
"I'm gonna go shift and mark territory," I told her, and went into another room to change form. "Lock up!" I called to her when as I tugged my shirt over my head. "I don't want to take any risks before we're sure he's gone. I'll scratch at the door when I'm ready to come back in, and you can see it's me out the window."
"Okay," she promised. She smiled down at my wolf form as I trotted out and waited at the door for her to let me out. "You sure are a nice guy," she said softly. I let her touch my ears — just to be nice, of course.
I tried not to sigh. How long had it been since anyone had given me a nice ear rub? Far, far too long. I thought of my mother's gentle fingers, so warm and kind, caring for her little pup. I would always be her little pup, even though I'd outgrown her by the time I was a teenager.
She was a good-sized wolf; I got really big really fast. My dad used to joke about how I must be chugging down bottles of vitamins in the night when they weren't looking. "What are we feeding that boy, Jenna?" he used to ask Mom teasingly. And she would just smile at both of us like she wanted to memorize these moments.
Shit, I wanted to cry. Why did I keep
